We spent our last two nights of a six-week NZ tour here, and it was a perfect finish. Akaroa is beautiful and quieter, being a little off the main tourist route. The drive from Christchurch takes about an hour and has stunning views along the way. We had our rented campervan, staying one night on grass and the next on a harbour-view hardstanding pitch, which was well worth the extra dollars. The pitches have fabulous views, and the grounds were well kept with clean, tidy modern facilities and a decent-sized pool. There’s also a handy track straight down to the equally lovely town.

This park was a highlight of our South Island trip, perched above Akaroa Bay with lovely views. The sites listed on booking websites can be very, very small, so those suit a cyclist with a small tent or a single self-contained van. The toilets were clean, and there were men’s, women’s, unisex, and accessible or family showers. We didn’t use the pool, but it looked nicely set up. Staff were friendly, helpful, always smiling, and ready to lend a hand. You can buy an ice cream or a small milk for coffee at reception. Nights were quiet, and the birds and cicadas were awesome 😎

There was plenty to keep the kids busy, and our site was generously sized. The camping ground has great facilities and amazing views. The owners have lovely staff, so friendly and helpful, they really do you proud!

We’d booked one powered site for Friday, 13th Feb, in our 7mtr motorhome, and paid $81.00. When we arrived around 8.15pm, it was pitch dark, the lighting to find the site was totally inadequate, and the spot was on a slope with a tree on one side. We used our ramps to get the MH onto them, but the slope was still severe. We spent an uncomfortable night lying downhill, then struggled to make breakfast and leave. We’ve stayed at many NZ motorcamps, including Top 10s, and sadly this has been the worst so far. The site and the value for money were definitely not good.

The powered motorhome site was spacious, with lovely views towards Akaroa and the surrounding area. Reception staff were very friendly, and the facilities were clean, with rubbish and recycling clearly labelled. The pool looked great, but we only stayed one night and didn’t get to use it. It’s about a 15-minute walk down to town, with a fairly steep climb back. There are lots of lovely places to eat and shop there.
