The room was comfortable, the setting lovely, and breakfast delicious. Based on the accommodation alone, I'd give it four stars. The hospitality was a different story. After a 4.5-hour drive in constant rain, we arrived 1.5 hours before the 4 pm check-in and knocked to ask if the room was ready. It was, and we were shown in, but the host was curt and made us feel like an inconvenience for arriving early. The next morning she seemed just as irritable when the electrics tripped while we had the heater, kettle, and lights on at once. We left a generally positive 8/10 review on Booking.com with a few mild comments, then got a private message ending, “How dare you be so arrogant”. Before booking, I'd read the host's public replies to less-than-perfect reviews on Booking.com. In one, she said a low rating came from someone being “very typical only of people from Christchurch.” The place has real charm, but the hospitality is a bit of a gamble.

We arrived on 29th October 25 for our first stop in New Zealand. The gardens are beautifully landscaped, and the views are wonderful. Our accommodation was spacious, airy, and well kept. Jane looked after us and served an amazing breakfast.

L’Abri was the highlight of our honeymoon. Jane's hospitality is one in a million, and her tastefully decorated home made us feel completely at home. The photos just don't do it justice. I highly recommend L’Abri.

Rain poured all weekend, but I was happy to spend the time by the woodfire and enjoy the superb views. L'Abri is a gem, with gorgeous, comfortable rooms and shared spaces. Jane went above and beyond as a host, even leaving extra treats in my room to go with my afternoon tea. The fresh breakfasts were fabulous. I can hardly wait to come back!

The cottage was tucked into Jane's gorgeous garden and had everything we needed for a warm, cozy, self-contained break. Her thoughtful touches made it feel special, from the flowers in the room to the delicious home baking. Breakfast was gourmet standard, served at the dining-room table in the main house with stunning mountain and water views. Jane was such a hospitable, wonderful host. It was a magical stay, and we'll definitely be back.
