Gamma Hotel

The location is great, about a 10-20 minute walk into the centre and Harbour. The rooms had plenty of space and were decent. The woman at reception was very helpful and let us leave our bags there for a while after checkout. You get what you pay for and a bit more, so I can't complain. I'd recommend it to anyone after somewhere simple.

The bed was comfortable and the room was clean, but those were the only real positives. The bathroom was in terrible shape: the toilet and cistern were badly cracked, as was the basin, and the toilet brush was filthy. The mouldy shower curtains stuck together and I had to peel them apart before I could use the shower. One bedroom window was cracked too, and the headboards were worn and damaged. There was a microwave but no dishes or cutlery, and the bare walls made the room feel sterile. We chose the ground-floor room because we had lots of suitcases and there’s no lift. It was set up for a disabled guest, with a wet-room bathroom. The hotel is central and not far from the railway station, but I wouldn’t recommend it beyond that.

The glass ceiling let in so much morning sun that sleeping after sunrise would be difficult. On the other hand, the room was roomy and the staff were helpful: they let us wait in the lobby before check-in and use the restroom there to freshen up, which we appreciated. The hotel is centrally placed for getting around the city, though the roads nearby were quite sloppy.

We left after just one night, even though we’d paid for two. The location was excellent, only a short walk from Spark Arena, but the room made the stay too unpleasant to continue. It had a strong bad smell, and turning on the air conditioning brought out an even worse mouldy odour, so we switched it off straight away. The triangular room layout left a big gap behind the headboard because the bed couldn’t sit flush against a wall. Our pillows kept falling into it all night, and we could barely sleep comfortably. Parking was cramped too, and maneuvering the car was difficult.
