We appreciated having dinner cooked for us, and the room worked fine for our group. Breakfast was minimal, so bring fresh milk if long life milk isn’t for you. There are lots of rules, and spa hours are limited. We felt like an inconvenience to the hosts, and the stay wasn’t quite what we’d expected.

Adding this to my first review because Karen has now claimed we arrived at 10 PM. We got there around 8:30 PM, with 9 PM being the latest possible check in. Our screenshots of the Booking.com cancellation and subsequent Airbnb booking show this, since we had to do it all before 9 PM. When we arrived, Karen insisted that we cancel our Booking.com reservation because “Booking takes too much commission.” We did what she asked, cancelled that reservation, and booked again through Airbnb as instructed. It’s all timestamped and documented. It’s interesting that they want the benefits of these platforms without the responsibilities that come with them. After reading the many negative reviews from other guests, I think it’s pretty clear who’s telling the truth here. And Karen, if honesty were a job requirement, you wouldn’t make it past the first interview. For my first review: Karen is a real C U Next Time. I wouldn’t recommend this stay. The cottage and location were beautiful, but Karen’s treatment of us overshadowed all of that. We accept that the payment misunderstanding was our responsibility: we’d booked through booking.com, she didn’t want that because of the commission and wanted cash, and she’d messaged me about it but I hadn’t read the message. Still, nothing justified how hostile she was. From the start, she spoke to us in a combative way instead of showing basic courtesy or professionalism. Even ordinary behaviour from our 4-year-old, just standing on the couch without jumping or causing damage, was treated like a major offence. It felt as if she was looking for reasons to scold us, which left the whole place tense and uncomfortable. We were tired and travelling with a young child, and her unnecessarily sharp tone made us seriously consider leaving to find somewhere else, if it hadn’t been late in the evening. A host’s attitude sets the tone, and this turned what could have been a lovely stay into a stressful, unpleasant one. A host should be there to serve guests, not harass them. Honestly, Karen would thrive in a job where the main task is keeping people away.

The location is peaceful, and I loved waking up to the sounds of nature. It was a great quiet break from the city. My room was cozy, clean, and had everything I needed, including fresh towels and tea and coffee. The host was super friendly and helpful throughout. I’d definitely return, and highly recommend it if you want somewhere comfortable to unwind.

The water smelled rotten and didn’t seem safe to drink, apparently because the supply wasn’t being maintained properly. We had brought our own full bottles, as we do in places around NZ with chlorinated water, but the owner accused us of stealing his water by refilling them. They were already full except for the one we’d used. That felt like a ridiculous claim, especially somewhere with so much rain on the West Coast. Some upkeep of the system could have avoided the water issue. The owner was very unfriendly and made false claims about us leaving a mess, which wasn’t remotely true. It’s sad to see frustration taken out on guests through accusations like that. I’d avoid this place.

Nigel was a lovely host, and there’s plenty of hiking around Pancake Rocks. We took a short walk across a nearby field to an empty beach at sunset. On our first night the sky was clear and dark, so we got a great look at the Milky Way, with lots of satellites passing by. Highly recommend.
