We stayed one night at the powered motorhome site, set on a terrace just below the lodge, while crossing from the west coast to the east. The location is lovely, and staff were welcoming and very helpful. The lodge is a winter ski lodge that makes good use of its facilities year round. It has what motorhome users need, including clean toilets, strong showers, and a good bar and restaurant serving the sort of food you’d expect at a ski lodge. The mountain views are impressive and worth the drive along the 6k dirt/gravel track from the main road. Take it very slowly in anything other than a 4x4. The motorhome area itself is basic, fairly flat, and has power. I didn’t see a water supply, so can’t confirm whether there is one. It’s a quiet area except for a generator that runs through the evening. You can hear it, but it isn’t overwhelming. Wi-Fi worked well in the lodge but wasn’t reliable down at the motorhome site. There was no phone signal either, which will frustrate some people. We enjoyed our stay, and the staff are really friendly. There seems to be limited accommodation around Arthur’s Pass, and Porters Ski Lodge makes a quirky, clean and friendly stop with great views. The lodge also has individual rooms and a backpackers room, though we didn’t use them.
We had a quiet, relaxing weekend about an hour from the city. The dorm bed was inexpensive, basic, clean, and neat, with tasty food at the bar. Prices were reasonable for somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Since it was off season for skiing, there were only a couple of other guests, so it felt like a peaceful haven. Staff were friendly and welcoming.
We stayed at an unpowered site and could use the lovely dining room whenever we wanted. The staff were incredibly hospitable, the showers were hot, and the Wi-Fi was great. The road up is bumpy, but cars can manage it fine. I’d recommend staying here whether you’re passing through or coming for a ski trip.
We loved the bike trails right on the doorstep. They’re fun, dry quickly, easy to climb and repeat, and the scenery is hard to beat. There are so many great landmarks nearby too, making this a good base for a couple of nights with the family. The lodge is in a fantastic spot, balancing the drive from our home in Christchurch with alpine scenery and warm hospitality. My family and I stayed in a cosy 4 bunk room with a double bunk top and bottom, and it had amazing valley views. The lodge and restaurant staff were so welcoming, and the food was delicious. We also joined the quiz night on Saturday. It was great fun and had a huge turnout. Looking forward to coming back soon!
The staff were brilliant, and a big thank you to George and Dunney for making our evening one to remember. The food at the Lodge bar/restaurant was incredible, with a good choice of drinks too. Both were very affordable for the location. We stayed at a campervan site while driving through Arthur's Pass in February, and it was easily one of the best places on our 2-week camping trip in South Island. The road up from the highway is unsealed, but it’s fine if you take it slowly. Toilets and showers are in the Lodge, a short walk up stairs from the campsite. They’re a little dated, but clean, open all the time, and have plenty of hot water with no time limit.
