I got the dates wrong and booked March 1 to March 2 instead of February 1 to February 2. I only noticed when I arrived. I asked whether they could change it and said I was happy to pay an extra fee, but the manager said they had sold their last room 15 minutes earlier. Online, rooms still appeared available. She said the listing hadn’t updated yet, so I went to the hotel next door. Their sign still said “vacancy” when I passed later that evening. I honestly think she lied because my booking was non-refundable, which felt pretty unpleasant. The hotel next door, “Bealey Avenue Motel,” was great. They tried to find out if I could get a refund and gave me a room at the price I’d seen online.

The road noise is the main drawback, since this is on Christchurch’s noisiest road. Otherwise, it’s a well-located motor inn with plenty of parking, adequate rooms, and good shower pressure.

The service was decent, and they moved us to another room. We needed that: our blankets had cigarette burns and the room smelled as if someone had just died there. Our friends were in the next room, where the window was smashed, and the toilet lock was missing.

The room was really dirty and gross. On the first morning, the fire alarms woke me twice, and the staff didn’t help, they just said sorry. Horrible stay.

The room was bland and badly in need of a major refit. The furniture was broken or very worn, and the cabinet under the bathroom sink was broken too. The bathroom had been repainted with sealer, and the job was very poor. Even the heater only blew cool air. I can only assume I got a good rate and was put in the worst room. Sorry, I won’t stay again.
