The private room my brother and I had worked perfectly for what we needed, and the complimentary tea, coffee, and milk were a nice extra. The hostel can feel a little confronting when you first arrive, but the permanent residents weren't an issue for us. We didn't see the property's cats in the accommodation area while we were there. Bus 5 runs to and from the city every 30 minutes, with a stop a short walk away. We only met the female host, who was easy to talk to and very accommodating. Mike was helpful on the phone too. Give it a try with an open mind.

We liked the private room itself, but the shared areas were dirty and a few spots smelled like cat pee. Two people who aren't the owners live there full time, and we found them a bit creepy to be around. The owners were very nice, though they forgot to mention that they only take cash and require a $20 bond.

The garden and campground are lovely, and the TV lounge is a comfortable spot to spend time. I stayed long term for a reason: the owners are warm and helpful, and there are always interesting travellers around. The facilities stay clean, the new cat is adorable, and I think this is still the cheapest place in town. They’re renovating the other building to add more space, so have a look.

The price is really low, and the shower and bathroom are good. The owner and staff are very friendly, and there are cute cats to greet you. It is a bit far from downtown, which may feel inconvenient. Just remember that payment is cash only.

You can camp in the garden if you’re trying to save money, and the owners are kind. It’s a basic hostel with decent enough facilities, though there’s no WiFi. I came back because the atmosphere is good and there are always great people around. As far as I know, it’s the cheapest place in Christchurch.
