I haven’t been back since the big quake, but I’m looking forward to seeing the finished work in a couple of years. I always found this place an eyesore that clashed with the rest of ChCh’s architecture, so I’m glad it’s gone. There are plenty of places with more soul nearby than corporate hovels like this one, or the Backpackers. I stayed at Dorothy's Hotel, now the Beaufort House, on two of my many visits to the Garden City. It’s classy, colorful, and close to everything in central ChCh. I wish things had happened under different circumstances.

It was sad to watch the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Christchurch come down after the February earthquake damaged it beyond repair. But we have to move on.

Awful service. I spent hours waiting at reception and nobody helped me.
