Parkview On Hagley

They cancelled my booking three weeks before the event, despite my having reserved seven months ahead for Christchurch’s busiest weekend. I still haven’t had a reply to any of my messages asking why. It feels like they may have taken advantage of demand to sell the room again at a higher price. If you need to be able to rely on a booking and expect integrity, this may not be the place for you.

We booked because the room was meant to have a spa bath, but there wasn’t a bath at all, just a wet-floor shower. Its slope was wrong, so water ran out the door onto the living area carpet. When we told a staff member, they said they’d pass it on to management. Nobody came to check or brought extra towels to mop it up, so we had to use our shower towels. The room looked nice when we arrived, but that was about it. There was no plug for the kitchen sink or tea towels for washing dishes, and we had one fork and three knives. No housekeeping was done during our three days, and our towels weren’t replaced. We got some fresh towels after asking at reception the first time. The next time the office was empty, so we called the after-hours number. The person said they’d have to drive in to bring towels, which meant nobody was actually on site. What if there had been an evacuation? We could hear people in neighboring rooms using the toilet and shower, and people were extremely loud in the hallways both day and night. I wouldn’t stay again or recommend it. I’ve since read that this experience is very common.

Traffic noise was an issue too, since the hotel overlooks two main roads into the city. But the worst part was how little care staff showed when we reported problems. We got the stock answer that they couldn’t do anything and would tell management, who would contact us. No one ever did. Why wasn’t there someone on site who could make a decision? We stayed at Parkview on Hagley twice in October 2025, coming back after several days around the South Island, and had room problems both times. In the first room, the TV didn’t work. We arrived on Friday and were told it couldn’t be fixed until Tuesday because Monday was a public holiday. That seemed like a minor, first-world problem, so we accepted it. Our second room had a string of other issues. Some light switches and power points didn’t work, including the bathroom outlet above the sink, so there was nowhere to shave or dry your hair in front of the bathroom mirror. One of the main reasons we chose the hotel was the bath, but it had no plug, so we couldn’t use it. The bathroom sink dripped constantly, and reception said it would take several days to fix. We put a face cloth in it to quiet the noise, but it was a fast drip and a waste of water. The washer and dryer took coins, which was fine, but reception wouldn’t give us change, so we had to go to a local convenience store. We wouldn’t recommend Parkview on Hagley.

It was noisy at night, and the rooms and showers were dirty. There was no attendant available, nobody at the front desk even at 9:30 in the morning, and calls went unanswered. Don’t stay here. Read the other reviews.
