The best night we’ve had in New Zealand so far came from the people at Uptown Backpackers. Everyone was warm and funny, and the whole place had such a great feel to it. We’d only just arrived when we were invited to Diego’s farewell dinner, after his year at the hostel. There was free food and drinks, and the night turned into a real highlight. I’ll remember the laughs and that farewell feast for a long time. Whatever creates that atmosphere, Uptown Backpackers has it.

Being able to walk to the shops, groceries and restaurants is the main plus here, but for me it didn’t make up for the lack of sleep. Street noise carried on all weekend, and even during the week people slammed doors. The rule says to keep things quiet after 10:30pm, but it was noisy throughout, and ear-to-ear good sleep was hard to come by. The place also wasn’t very clean. They don’t provide room service, so even during a two-week stay the private room wouldn’t be serviced. I wouldn’t choose it for my next visit.
The kitchen was the highlight for me. The long-term guests welcomed me so warmly that, even though I was ready to call it a day, I stayed up until 5am. The common room feels really cozy, and the spacious kitchen opens onto the dining area, so you’re still part of the conversation. Staff were lovely, and the rooms were what you’d expect for a comfortable hostel night. Five out of five, would recommend 🫡🫶
The beds in the female dorm were amazingly comfortable, and I got a great night’s sleep. Everything was clean, including the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. I found the living room a bit too dark, though, and wouldn’t want to spend much time there. A good hostel for one night.
Most of the staff were helpful and nice. We asked to do our own laundry, even though there’s only one washing machine and they usually do it for guests, and they were happy to let us. We emailed a question before arriving but never got a reply. The private double room was clean and a decent size, and we liked having a window since the rest of the hostel has none. Still, most nights were noisy until midnight or 1am. We could hear both the street and other guests, even with earplugs. The bathrooms looked modern and were clean, but they’re shared between everyone and there aren’t enough. The shower swung between very hot and cold. We couldn’t bring ourselves to cook because the kitchen smelled bad the whole time. The lounge was often smelly too. Fine for a night or two, but I wouldn’t stay longer.
