Mt Dobson Motel

Good value, with nicely equipped rooms. I had a lovely stay at this classic country motel, especially enjoying the character-filled pub. The food was incredible, and the staff were friendly and on the ball. I’d definitely recommend it.

The room felt very old and smelled like fish guts. Maybe that explains the sign asking people not to cook fish. The sheets were very clean, but the bedcovers were well past their best. Service was excellent, but at these prices I can’t recommend this pet-friendly place. I’d look for somewhere cleaner and more updated.

At $260 a night, this was by far the worst value of all the hotels and motels we’ve stayed in on our trip. We’re Canadians touring New Zealand’s South Island after visiting the Philippines, Australia, Fiji and the North Island, and our holiday began January 7. The motel room was worn, the kitchen was outdated and gross, and instead of the advertised queen bed there were two singles. The TV was about the size of my computer screen. When I raised these problems, the husband and wife who had recently taken over didn’t acknowledge them. They were quick to say they could find us somewhere else for $500, $700 or $1,300 a night. It felt like they’d missed the PR course before buying the place. Think twice before paying so much for a basic motel room that needs a complete facelift.

Clean and comfortable, and the price was good. There’s also a pub next door with tasty food at good prices.
