It’s a cute spot where you feel tucked into the bush with Kea nearby, but you’re still very close to town. We enjoyed our two days and ended up extending our stay. We’d read some poor reviews about the laundry price and shower queues, but didn’t run into either issue and were pleasantly surprised. A few kitchen hobs didn’t seem to work, and we had some trouble with the outdoor elements. The shower beside the spa, for rinsing off, only seemed to run warm. That was nice, but could be a health hazard unless we were using it wrong. The bar, spa, and sauna on site were great. We’d absolutely stay again.

The room was good for the price, and everything was clean. There’s a very large kitchen and a laundromat open 24/7 where you can pay by card. The community room isn’t the best, but otherwise it’s very good. Definitely recommend.

The grounds at Rainforest retreat are beautifully maintained, with lovely landscaping among the native bush and walkways through it. We stayed in a deluxe one-bedroom spa tree house, and the room was spotless, beautiful, and had everything we needed, including a very comfortable bed. After a hike one day, the private spa was especially nice, looking out over the bush while Tui and Kereru swooped around above us. Monsoon restaurant and bar had a great food selection. We enjoyed the pizzas and a glass of wine while watching others play pool. Franz Josef is a great little town, with plenty of activities to keep all ages busy. I can’t recommend the stay enough.

It was very quiet, with parking on site and just a two-minute walk to the shops, bars and conservation centre. There are several types of accommodation, from lodges and a backpackers hostel to luxury cabins, and we enjoyed spending an evening there. Reception was friendly and explained everything. The hot tub and sauna were closed for maintenance, and they looked quite small for the number of people around anyway.

We’d happily come back. Our rooms had plenty of space and were very comfortable, tucked among the rainforest. The staff were lovely and even left a key for us so we could check in late. A great base for our trip.
