The Ashley Hotel

We were told the hotel was fully booked when we asked to change rooms, so we had to stay in the separate motel-style unit our family had been given, away from the main building. It felt more like an external house, with a living room, kitchen, and two bedrooms, than a hotel room near the lobby. This was unfortunately the worst accommodation of our trip, and the place felt like a poorly maintained motel despite being called a hotel. There were broken windows, a faulty shower, bathroom doors coming loose, and an unpleasant moldy smell. We found flies and spiders, and the sheets didn’t look properly clean. Some of us even had what looked like bed bug bites after the night. The TV had lines on the screen. We asked staff to help tune it, but that didn’t fix the picture. Breakfast was very basic with few options, and there were no hot chocolate or milk machines, so we didn’t eat much. Compared with our other stays in New Zealand, this was very disappointing. I’d suggest checking recent room conditions carefully before booking.

We enjoyed our stay. The room was large and very clean, with storage, a desk, comfortable seating, and well placed lights and plugs for everything we needed. The breakfast buffet was very good, and the staff were helpful.

The rooms were nice and clean, and the hotel’s pool, whirlpool, and fitness facilities made it feel like fair value for the money. But it’s a shame those amenities aren’t looked after better. The fitness room was well equipped, but the equipment was broken and the room hadn’t been cleaned, even the following day. The pool didn’t have enough water and had lots of dead bugs in it. They could easily clean these facilities and let guests use them. Honestly, this was one of the “best” motels or hotels we had on our trip, which makes the lack of attention to them such a pity.

From check-in to check-out, everything at Ashley Hotel was smooth and hassle-free, and the staff were welcoming, friendly, and ready to help. As a couple, we found the clean, spacious rooms comfortable and easy to relax in after a day exploring. We also appreciated the cozy feel and the care put into the room setup. Ashley Hotel gave us a warm, enjoyable stay in Greymouth, and we’d recommend it to other couples looking for somewhere pleasant and stress-free.
