A really poor stay. We booked through Airbnb after the photos made the place look decent, and messaged to ask about checking in late because we were driving from Hanmer Springs and wanted to take our time. There was no reply. We reached Kaikoura around 2 pm and called, still with no answer. Worried we might be left without a place if we arrived after dark, especially given the remote location, we went straight to the property. The host showed us around, and it was smaller than we expected. She said the best way to contact her was to search around the property for her. There was even a notice in the living room saying they don’t really check emails, messages or calls. How are guests supposed to get in touch when they’re away from the property and need to tell her something? The cottage needs much more than a touch up. I understand wanting to keep an old, rustic feel, but too many things weren’t right. It’s tiny and only really suitable for two. There were three of us, and once we opened the sofa bed there was literally no room to walk, despite the Airbnb listing saying it could fit up to four. The bathroom is so small that turning around with your feet planted means hitting a wall, mirror or washbasin, which is more like a cereal bowl. The kitchen is listed as an amenity, but there’s barely any counter space beside the sink. You have to keep shifting things around to dry utensils, use the toaster or set out the electric stove. The place is unkempt, with cobwebs along the outside walls. The beautiful-looking bathtub in the photos was dirty and hadn’t been used in ages, and the outside tub had no hot water. One window had been broken for months, according to the host, because the repair person kept saying he’d come but hadn’t shown up. It was cold inside at night with only one heater for the whole place, which the host said was enough. The sofa bed was uncomfortable, but when I said so, she replied that she’d slept on it and found it perfectly fine. Lavendyl Farms is listed by the Kaikoura Tourist Centre as something to see, with a description of lush lavender gardens. What we saw was a wider property that also seemed to be missing the care it deserved. The host’s attitude made things worse, as she seemed disconnected from the reality of the situation. Rustic style isn’t a reason to charge much more than better located, better equipped places in Kaikoura. Bread and yogurt don’t justify premium pricing.

I can’t recommend this apartment. It was dirty, several things were broken or defective, and it seemed nothing had been done to it for years. The bathroom sink was nearly coming off the wall, there were holes in the walls, the toilet paper holder had been ripped out, and the shower curtain had mold spots. It was only superficially clean, with dust everywhere. There’s no dishwasher, which would be fine, but there was no dish sponge and the only brush was very old and disgusting. For the outdoor bathtub, we were given just a suction cup and had to clear the drain ourselves before using it, or the water wouldn’t drain. We booked through Airbnb. We’d been polite and left a good rating because we preferred to raise issues privately, but that turned out to be a mistake. The host was curt and unfriendly, perhaps stressed when we arrived, then left us a bad Airbnb review. That was hard to understand, since my wife and I always try to leave places in good order and had received very positive feedback on more than 50 other reviews. She made many false claims without speaking to us first. In response to the host: I expected you to make excuses for the bad reviews, as you’ve never tried to fix the problems. You can see this on Google and especially TripAdvisor. This isn’t revenge, and I deeply regret giving five stars out of kindness. It’s too easy to leave good reviews when accommodation is often bad, like yours. The place was dirty, there was nothing to wash dishes with, the tub had to be cleaned first because it wouldn’t drain, and many things were broken. I hope you’ll work on it. We also tried to contact you through Airbnb for two days and got no response, which is why this review isn’t revenge. Please improve how you treat guests and invest in the apartment instead of spreading lies and treating guests badly.

The grounds have lovely views of mount fife and the sea, and we spent a few peaceful nights at Dylans Country Cottages. Sitting on the balcony under the stars with only nature around was amazing. Myra was very accommodating, and the freshly baked breakfast treats were lovely. I’d thoroughly recommend it for a quiet getaway.

We stayed in the Kowhai cottage with our labrador, and the big spa bathtub was a lovely finishing touch. The cottage was cosy, with a mountain view, and Myra brought us warm homemade bread, eggs and homemade joghurt for breakfast. It’s surrounded by Myras lavender farm, and her lavender shop is worth a look too. I highly recommend it.

After hiking Mt Fyffe, the bath under the stars was just perfect. The cottage itself is quaint, lovely and so peaceful. Myra was a warm, welcoming host who baked fresh bread and brought us fresh eggs and Yoghurt in the morning. I also loved spending time with the beautiful dog, Buster. 100% recommend!
