Champers Motor Inn

The accessibility problems made the whole stay stressful. We travelled with two wheelchair users and a lot of medical equipment, so access mattered. Even after I called ahead to confirm our booking for two wheelchair-accessible rooms, they first tried to put us upstairs. They changed that after I explained again, but only one room had an accessible toilet. The other was a regular room. The doors weren't properly accessible and there were no ramps, so we had to lift the wheelchair and keep transferring the patients. The rooms were old and not truly wheelchair-friendly as advertised. Checkout was delayed a little because of equipment problems, and I accept that was our fault. I politely asked if we could wait outside the room for ten minutes for our van and support staff. The manager refused, saying they'd already done us “many favors.” The accessible room issue had been their mistake. I ended up carrying our belongings out near reception one by one while helping two wheelchair patients. The manager's attitude was rude and unprofessional. Guests with disabilities deserve kindness and understanding. Very poor service and accessibility. Never again. I'd rate this motel and the manager negative zero.

We had rooms 10, 20 and 22, all with fantastic shower pressure. The owner also upgraded one of our three standard twin rooms to one with a kitchen after learning our group included seven adults and two toddlers, which we really appreciated. The rooms were tidy and well presented, with comfortable beds, good showers and clean facilities. They aren't claiming to offer five-star accommodation, and we were satisfied with what we got. The cleaner was pleasant when we asked for extra towels, despite the language barrier, and I saw him help other guests with requests too. Reading the reviews, it seems the owners have taken comments on board and made improvements. I came away grateful to the owner and team at Champers Motor Inn. Wishing them and future travellers abundant blessings, and thanks for the accommodation.

The bathroom and shower were fine, and the TV was nice and big. The fridge made some noise overnight, but we could put up with that. The room itself had a disgusting smell as soon as we opened the door. We had to open all the windows and even go to the supermarket for air freshener. Then we found bugs and cobwebs. Luckily we had fly spray in the car and killed five spiders in the first ten minutes. There was no receptionist at the desk, so we called the number provided. They asked for my full credit card details over the phone, which felt very odd and fishy. I've never had that happen at another motel. It was a semi-decent stay overall, but not a great start.

The price was cheap and the staff were polite, but our first stay at The Champers was a huge disappointment. We booked three nights, Friday to Monday, and the stairs to the room felt dangerous. Each step seemed ready to give way, and my friend noticed it too. There was also a hole in the floor of the top balcony, a serious safety hazard. The shower barely worked. The pressure was awful, the shower head didn't function properly, and it was too low unless you crouched to wash. The TV didn't work at all. We were given only one pillow, which is ridiculous for a hotel stay, and comfort clearly wasn't a priority. With those safety issues and missing basics, the stay wasn't acceptable. I believe a refund is warranted and will be seeking one. I wouldn't recommend it, even for one night.
