The Bug Backpackers

We had a really relaxing stay at the bug backpackers, and it's close to the shops and hospital. The people who own and run it are lovely. I've seen some bad reviews from the past, and the place has suffered because of them, but my partner and I experienced excellent service, nice beds and bedding, and clean facilities. And they have a really good biscuit jar. Thanks, Bug backpackers, we really enjoyed our stay.

It was a strange setup, with what seemed like an older family running the place while living there too. The atmosphere felt odd, and someone stole our food. I've never had that happen in a hostel before.

The hostel is in a very nice location, and the staff were friendly. Unfortunately, we got bedbugs during our stay.

The staff member who attacked me was horrifying. DO NOT STAY HERE. I booked it myself, and it's much better than a lot of places I stayed in Auckland that Orbit Travel booked for me. Some of those were complete dives. Other rooms may be better value, but the room with a private bathroom didn't feel worth the money. It was advertised with a mountain view, though you could barely see one. For $10 more, I could have booked an okay hotel, but I needed somewhere quickly and could've used some social time. I found a cockroach when I unrolled my towel, though I didn't see any more. My requested cot wasn't provided. I did arrive earlier than I'd said, but they let me check in right away, which was good. The bed was comfy, and the clean kitchen, nice colour scheme, outdoor space, and things to do in the common area were all good. There was a varied mix of guests, though I felt a bit out of place at first. I imagine it'd be ideal for a solo traveler. I got a strange mix of welcoming and unwelcoming from the place. One staff member seemed to give me dirty looks, and I'm not sure why, since I know I hadn't done anything to deserve it. Maybe it's RSD, maybe it's reality, or maybe I was just sensitive after being treated awfully at the previous place. I might stay again, but I'm not sure. I probably would've absolutely loved it in my early 20s. If it's the right time and place for you, it could be a 5/5. Someone in the other building was playing electric guitar and singing awesome grunge while I waited for my food delivery. Some might call that noisy, but I really enjoyed it, and I couldn't hear it from my room, so I wouldn't say it was a problem. It's an old building, so some noise is to be expected. Doors opening and closing and road noise were the worst of it for me. Closing the windows blocked out most of the traffic noise.
