That bar is a brilliant place to sit in a leather chair with a beer and watch a storm come in. The menu has plenty of variety, and the service was quick, friendly and welcoming. Those parts were five-star for me. I really struggled with the rating because so much of the South Sea Hotel is excellent, and it has real atmosphere. I knew it was a historic period building, so wasn't expecting Hilton-level polish, but a few small things could use attention. There were little dead insects on our cottage bathroom ceiling, the shower curtain had stuck together and needed pulling apart to hang properly, and the bedroom curtains had lost their pattern where they were stripped. Nothing major, but easy details to fix. So close to five stars. I'd happily come back.

The bay right outside gives the place a lovely setting, and there were lots of friendly locals around, so the vibe was great. We had blue cod and seafood chowder for dinner, then salmon and venison pizza for lunch. I highly recommend the pizza!

We only stayed one night and wished we had booked longer. The location is handy for the dock, the rooms are clean and adequate, and the seafood was excellent. The fresh blue cod, calamari rings and clam chowder were delicious, and the hearty full English breakfast was tasty too. Our Kiwi spotting trip with Real NZ was superb, with three sightings in one night alongside Charles and India.

After the three-day Rakiura Great Walk, we found comfy beds, lovely staff and a nice guest lounge. The upstairs view over the wharf and harbour is gorgeous. We also lucked into quiz night on Sunday, which was heaps of fun. The food was just amazing. I had the cod burger on a really good brioche bun; my friends enjoyed their steak and teriyaki cauliflower. Breakfast was wonderful too, with the big breakfast and Mexican beans. We finished everything, though it was a stretch! Looking forward to staying again.

We stayed one night in the nice bedrooms behind the hotel and had an excellent time. There was a strange noise from the roof near the end of the day, but it stopped during the night. The pizzas we ordered for dinner were very good.
