For context, a four-bed dorm costs $212 a night in total. I know things cost more on Steward Island, but elsewhere that price would put you in the luxury category, with rooms four times the size. That made me more critical than I usually am of a hostel. I'd still recommend this place, but with the cost and a few drawbacks, I'd call it okay to good rather than great. Mosquito blinds on the windows would help a lot, and they can't cost much. Come on, put some of that $212 a night toward them 😉. At times there's a bit too much of a wire 8 mentality. The broken window handles on the toilets need fixing, and the gun shells used as toilet locks should be replaced with something proper. None of that is a huge problem, but broken things leave an impression. The showers are poorly designed too: the drains are where you enter and get changed, there's barely room to change, and it's hard to keep your stuff dry. Hopefully they've learned from using wood-based materials for the shower walls 🤪.

The place was clean, and reception was pleasant and helpful. There's a big shared kitchen and lounge, and the location is fairly central, though most places are in such a tiny town. My single room was very small and basic: a light, heater, two small comfortable beds, a tiny bedside table and a window with a blind. I could hear the person next door snoring for most of the night. The basic, very small showers and toilets were 25 steps away. I'd suggest eating at the South Sea Pub or buying food at the local Four Square.

We camped for three nights and found the tent sites great. The facilities were amazing, with a huge, well-equipped kitchen, a lounge and nice hot showers. Everything stayed clean, and the owners were friendly. At $25 per person per night, it's such good value. One of the best places we've stayed.

I stayed here before and after the Rakiura track. The kitchen is the best equipped, the common room is super relaxed, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Outstanding!

A kiwi is often spotted at night near the tent sites, which was a nice surprise. The staff are very friendly, the location is great, and the shared kitchen and relaxing space are excellent. An incredible base for exploring Stewart island. We'd definitely stay again and recommend it.
