The Sanctuary @ Bay of Islands

A great place to unwind and take in the views. The owners were friendly, welcoming, and helpful, and the whole property was very clean. Our room was large and comfortable, with drinks waiting for us, including a very nice wine. I highly recommend this lovely hotel.

The infinity pool and views were gorgeous, and breakfast was a lovely start to the day. Jagger, the owner, made fresh orange juice, some of the jams herself, and served toast, yogurt, fruit, and granola. Coffee and tea were available in the room and breakfast area, all included. Our fridge had excellent local wine and beer in it, too. From the moment we arrived, Glennis made us feel welcome. She shared taxi details, recommended restaurants in Paihia, the closest town, and even drove us there. The Sanctuary felt personal and relaxed, and I only wish we’d had longer to enjoy it. The hotel has a distinctive setup, with a door code for entry and individual rooms that don’t lock. Our room was cosy, with a small shower but amazing water pressure. The towels were probably the best I’ve ever had at a hotel, and the bathrobes and balcony were nice touches. A peaceful getaway with lovely thoughtful details and stunning views.

The views were world class, and waking up to the rainforest was truly insane. We stayed three nights and had a nice, filling breakfast. The Sanctuary is tucked away from the crowds in pahia, but it’s easy to get to the car ferry. Jagger was gracious, quirky, kind, and welcoming. It felt more like hanging out with a close friend than staying at a hotel. The amenities were top notch. Could not recommend it more highly.

My husband and I spent four days here for our wedding anniversary, and every day was a delight. Glennis and Dave were friendly and accommodating, with lots of suggestions for things to do around town and restaurants they like. The property was well maintained. Our room was heated, as was the towel rack, and even the toilet floor was heated, which was amazing. Shampoo, body soap, and conditioner were provided. The bed was comfy, and when my husband asked for a firmer foam, they had one available. Breakfast was pretty good, with several cereals, mixed nuts, canned and fresh fruit, a coffee machine, an impressive tea selection, and yogurt. Glennis also offered toast with lots of choices. India, the house cat, was happy to be patted once or twice. We had a really memorable stay and hope to see Glennis and Dave again. Thanks, guys!
