Haka House Bay of Islands

The room we got was fantastic, with a city panorama and a skylight, and the kitchen stayed clean and was really well equipped. What made this our best Haka House stay yet was how welcome Inka made us feel. She greeted us so warmly, talked with us, and right away shared ideas for things to do and activities we could book, whatever our available time. Please pass along our best wishes to Inka and the manager. I’d definitely recommend staying here.

I loved the view from the kitchen and lounge. You can see a nearby island and the open sea, and I never got tired of looking at it. Haka House Hostel is right in town, close to the wharf and shops, yet it was quiet and soundproof at night. The beds were comfortable, but the room was small and got quite hot. There was no air conditioning or window to open, and the fan didn’t cool it much, so I struggled to sleep. Air conditioning in the rooms would help, especially in summer. Still, it’s a good cheap place to stay in Paihia.

The location made getting around easy, with restaurants, shops and public transport close by. But the facilities were noticeably dirty, which made the stay uncomfortable from the outset. There were no windows in the rooms, so there was no fresh air. Even with the fan running, ours felt extremely hot and stuffy.
