The restaurant food was excellent, and I think it was the best we’ve had on the North Island during our trip. I had the fish dish tonight and it was excellent too. One suggestion: it would be better to have the specials written down with a full description instead of hearing them read out. We stayed two nights at Oreti collection in lake house 12 on our tour down through New Zealand. The five star accommodation had two double bedrooms and everything we could need, with amazing views of lake Tapau. It’s a bit remote, about an hour’s drive into Tapau, but very relaxing. We had dinner at the restaurant both nights and would definitely stay again if we’re in the area.

The place is lovely and the service friendly, but coffee was a letdown. There were two coffee signs on the drive in and espresso advertised outside the restaurant, yet whenever I asked, I was told it wasn’t available or pointed to instant coffee sachets. Please don’t advertise coffee and then dash our hopes of a proper caffeine fix!

It was very clean and spacious, though rather dated, and the personnel were nice. We were given the wrong room key and nearly walked in on another guest. Thankfully we knocked first, and it was easily sorted out. The views are beautiful. We booked it for the Tongariro Alpine crossing day hike, and it’s very close and convenient for the trail and shuttle. Having a washer and dryer when we got back helped a lot. I didn’t take those practical points into account for my review.
