Tongariro Junction Motel

Louis and Nicole stayed an hour past their usual check-in time to help us get inside when we were running late, which we really appreciated. It’s a no-frills place at a great price and in a good location. Our private room was clean and had the basic amenities we expected.

For $80, I got a clean queen bed with fresh sheets, which was honestly all I needed. The room was simple, without extras, but comfortable and clean. The place is a bit worn, though the people are genuinely nice, and the shared kitchen and showers were fine. If you want a basic, affordable place to stay, this is good value and just what I was after.

A big storm shut the main roads heading south, and we were stuck in a real “can’t get there from here” situation. Sleeping in the car didn’t sound appealing, so we saw the sign and pulled in. Luckily, they had a room, and they let me see it before I booked. It was sparkling clean, with crisp sheets, a comfortable bed, a hot shower, and coffee. We even managed a hike along the river before turning in.

Don’t be put off by the outside, it doesn’t look that flash. My unit was modern inside, roomy, and meticulously clean, and I was upgraded to one with air conditioning at no charge. The TVs in the lounge and bedroom were easy to use, and the staff were welcoming, pleasant, and efficient. Great location and very well priced for what you get. I stay in Turangi now and then and wouldn’t hesitate to come back.
