Tongariro River Retreat - Hostel

The place is a bit make-shift in some areas, but you can tell it’s loved. We got more than just somewhere to sleep, and it was much cheaper than usual. The host is really nice and knows his stuff, especially when it comes to helping you save money. He connected us with another backpacker who had a car, so we didn’t have to pay for a shuttle to the Tongariro Crossing. He’s happy to help with whatever you need, and the free parking was great too.

The owner made a cake to share at breakfast and took us out to see a mountain sunset, chatting with us on the way there and back. He also knows a lot about what to do and see nearby and goes well out of his way to help guests. For the price, it’s great value. The beds were comfortable and clean enough, and the showers and toilets were all clean and working. The shared kitchen and dining spaces were spacious and practical.

A short walk gets you to the river, and the town centre is close by. The rooms had what we needed for a good night’s rest, though the bathroom was a little run-down. Service was great, with lots of advice on places to eat and the best walks. There’s a food truck out front that does a great burger.

The owner was very nice and helpful, the price was very low, and the large shared kitchen was well equipped. The bedroom was the letdown. The beds, mattresses, pillows and linen all felt very old, though they must have been cleaned. When we arrived, the toilet hadn’t been cleaned and had lots of hair on the bowl. There was mold on the shower curtain too. If you’re after the lowest price and good service, this could be an option.
