Colonial Motel Twizel

The sheets were clean, but the double bed was uncomfortable and we kept rolling together. It had a mattress protector, but only one pillowcase and no pillow protector. Room 12 was small, modern and gungey. The owner lives in Wanaka, I discovered. I've noticed motels declining lately, and I'll now look for owner/operator places because the standard seems higher. I thought about complaining to reception but figured there was no point if they weren't the owners. The room was dirty enough that I worried about touching things. There was toothpaste splattered on the bathroom tap, soap dispenser and shelf; a hair in the dirty fridge; grease on the backsplash; coffee in the knife and fork drawer; dust on the bedside table; and a filthy heatpump remote, plus other things that hadn't been cleaned. There was a note asking guests to wash and dry the dishes before leaving, and the room was serviced only every second night. Poor service for $220 a night. If you want a clean, hygienic unit, this isn't for you. I have photos but can't load them to this review.

The bed was comfy, but cleaning didn't seem to be done properly for what you pay. Every cup still had drinking chocolate stuck to the bottom, and there were left-behind lipsticks, hair clips and hair in the utensil cupboard. The bathroom door wouldn't close. Then there were the notes saying to wash the dishes and leave the room as you found it. For $200+ a night, it felt like they wanted us to clean the room ourselves. 🫠

A decent place, but the WiFi didn't reach the whole of our room, number 15. We got no signal on the bed, though it worked okay at the other end. Our room was on the corner of the property, so other rooms may not have the same issue.

A calm place with a lovely mountain view. Each room had its own parking space, the beds were comfortable, and there was an air fryer along with some other appliances to use.
