Waihi Motel

The location worked really well, close to the central area, with cafes, restaurants, bars and a museum nearby. Waihi Beach is about a 10 minute drive away. Our room was the cleanest motel room I've ever stayed in, and the lady who welcomed us was really lovely. I'll definitely come back soon.

We had a quiet room even though the motel sits on a main road, thanks to the double glazing. The rooms were spotlessly clean, and it was handy having the toilet separate from the bathroom. Downstairs, there's a lovely, well-kept courtyard shaded by big palm trees; upstairs rooms have a small balcony with a patio table and chairs. The owner is so friendly. Wifi was fine, and Sky TV had plenty of channels.

The place was tidy and nice, and the hostess is lovely. This was our second stay in the past 12 months. The rooms suited us fine since we just needed somewhere to crash overnight while visiting family. For four adults, $235 felt fair, with another $20 for an extra adult.

Cindy was polite enough, but our New Year's Eve stay was unsettling. A town siren sounded all night, and my kids were scared. I kept the doors locked because I didn't know what was happening. I expected the hosts to let guests know about the emergency, but we got no help and called the fire department ourselves. We were told it was apparently house fires, which was still disturbing for visitors from out of town. We left a day early just to get some proper rest, and the kids couldn't wait to go home. The rooms are very dated, with concrete walls and old appliances, and I didn't feel I could trust the outlets. We were three adults and two children, but were given only one towel each per day, a problem when we'd gone to Waihi for the beach. In town, there wasn't much to do besides walk to a local park and look at the mines. Waihi beach itself was outstanding. The lifeguard service was amazing, and we had a great time at their annual racing events for all ages, with free ice creams and sausages. Big props to the lifeguard service men and woman here.
