The hosts' care is what really made my stay at Manowhenua Lodge - Hostel special. Before I arrived, I called a few times with questions, and they kindly reassured me about my reservation and told me to drive safely. I got in late, feeling nervous about the remote drive, but found a warm welcome with tea and coffee supplies, snacks and milk in the fridge because I’d mentioned I like milk in my coffee. At 5 a.m. they texted to check whether the Alpine Crossing was open. It felt like being treated as family. I stayed in summer 2025, and the lodge is just outside Tongario National Park, a handy base for the Tongario Alpine Crossing. It was quiet, and I slept really well. My room was cozy, comfortable and very clean, and the shared showers and bathrooms were spotless. The large kitchen was a highlight too: spacious, fully equipped, clean, neatly organized and with plenty of seating. A lovely girl from France cleaned it daily. The hosts gave useful advice about the park, weather and hiking conditions. Their round-trip crossing shuttle made the day easy, and I could leave my car safely at the lodge for free. That saved me the hassle of driving to Ketetahi, the trail endpoint, then arranging another shuttle to Mangatepōpō, the start. The fare matched other services but was much more convenient, and I didn't have to worry about missing my reserved shuttle. For the crossing or trails like Tama Lakes, I highly recommend Manowhenua Lodge - Hostel. I'd absolutely stay again.

Tracey helped me work out which hikes to do and what shuttles to take during my two-night stay at Manowhenua. It was quiet while I was there, and everything was very clean. The hosts were definitely the highlight: so friendly that they even drove after me when I left my towel in the room. Thanks, and see you again!

I stayed here long term and always found the place clean, with a kitchen that had everything I needed. It would work just as well for a quick overnight stop. Tracey and Thomas are incredible, and they make you feel like family while you're here and even after you leave. The beds are comfy, and the showers are clean, hot and have good pressure, just right after a long day's hike. I couldn't recommend the place more.

Tracey and Thomas looked after us all winter season 2025 after kindly taking us in. My boyfriend and I had started the season at another lodge that was below our standards and expectations, so we were grateful to find such lovely, helpful hosts. The facilities are cleaned regularly, and there's a good quiet-hours policy that respects the staff working. I had an incredible time at Manowhenua Lodge and hope to come back one day. I can't recommend it enough.

We had a family holiday in the alpine region and found the accommodation clean, tidy, warm and welcoming. The kitchen had everything we needed and plenty of room for several groups to move around. All the hosts were kind and accommodating. We'll definitely come back!
