The Barn worked well for our two days of meetings, and George and the team kept us supplied with coffee and water. The rooms were spacious, beautifully furnished and, above all, well insulated, so they weren’t cold or drafty. Everything was clean and tidy, and we really enjoyed our time at Woodhouse Mountain Lodge. George and Monique were fantastic hosts who made us feel welcome and comfortable from the start, even with other guests and a conference happening at the same time. Our group had a two-day retreat, with one overnight stay, and the Woodhouse Lodge kitchen provided all the meals, from tea breaks and lunches to dinner and breakfast. It was all delicious, with generous servings and plenty of leftovers, especially from morning and afternoon tea. The chef was happy to accommodate special requests. The chocolate dessert on Friday night deserves a special mention, it was amazing. I’d definitely recommend the place.

The views are incredible, and the bed was very comfortable; the shower had great pressure too. Every staff member we met was delightful, and breakfast was top notch. We didn’t have dinner, but if the same chef cooks it, I expect you’d be happy. A small issue with our key was sorted quickly. Getting there was a surprise: the last 5k is on a narrow, unsealed road with lots of blind corners, and it wasn’t well signposted. That put us off, though it isn’t the lodge’s fault, so it’s worth knowing beforehand. At the villa, the outside chairs were lounge-style, had no cushions and were uncomfortable, with webs on them. The sliding door tracks were filthy, which wasn’t the cleaning detail we expected for the price. The steep path down to the main lodge was covered in leaves and easy to slip on, and the road to the villa had no lights, which felt dangerous. Weeds around the villa also stood out against the main lodge. We’d recommend visiting, but for a premium price these things could be improved.

The grounds and villa surroundings were beautiful and well kept, the rooms spacious with a nice view, and staff were really friendly. Food service was fast and very tasty. But before booking, I wish I’d known about the 15-20 minutes of rough, uneven gravel road on the way in. That might be fine in an off-road vehicle, but I don’t have one, and my car was badly damaged, leaving me with a severe oil leak and a costly repair. It couldn’t make it up the hills to the villa, either, so I had to park elsewhere and walk. I know this isn’t really the lodge’s fault, but a warning in the welcome email would have helped, because it put a real damper on our gift retreat stay. The room also had dead bugs everywhere, including ants by the pillowcases. We had to spend about 10 minutes clearing them away before we could relax. I’d rate it three stars and probably wouldn’t return. The rooms should be cleaned before guests arrive, and visitors should take a four-wheel drive.

There’s no TV, just lovely views and peaceful places to unwind, which makes it a great escape from city life. You can read, walk in nature, or enjoy the pool, spa, sauna and tennis courts. Dinner was next level, with beautifully prepared food in an intimate dining room. Breakfast was included and rounded off a lovely one-night stay. It really feels like your own little piece of paradise.

The staff were the standout for me. The ladies were incredibly friendly and kind, and honestly deserve to be paid more, whatever they’re earning. The setting feels luxurious, with bush right at your back door, a very comfortable bed and a shower I can only describe as the best ever. The lodge also served a very good quality three-course dinner, with mountain and valley views that were amazing. The spa in our room wasn’t working, though. And it’s quite a hike up and down between the car and the room, especially if you’re carrying luggage.
