Bastimentos is a small island with no cars, and water can sometimes be unavailable because of the big hotel project at red frog beach. You’ll hear chickens and kids playing in the morning. It isn’t a place for people needing everything, or expecting a 4-5 star stay. Still, Sea Pearl gets you about as close to that as you can on Bastimentos, while letting you experience the island’s culture. Bastimentos isn’t Bocas! We found Sea Pearl after trying a couple of other hostels and hotels on the island, and it felt like a different kind of stay. Having a kitchen was a real plus: the other places we stayed at or considered didn’t allow outside food, so you had to buy everything from them at marked-up prices. We could cook for ourselves and eat on the terrace, which has an amazing sunset view. A couple of nights, dolphins were right out front. Archie also runs sunset and snorkeling trips on his small sailboat, which I highly recommend. We quickly became friends with Archie and Hellen and expect we’ll see them again.

We booked spontaneously and the friendly owners let us check in early, which we really appreciated. They were very pleasant to deal with and I’d happily recommend them. This is the cleanest place we’ve stayed in Panama so far. The apartment is extremely well equipped, the rooms are tidy, and the bed is very comfortable. The shower has running water all the time, which isn’t something you can take for granted on Bastimentos.

Bastimentos is a great island if you stay away from the main town. During our visit, we noticed the immediate neighbors blasting music, and there was construction at the accommodation. It’s also convenient that you can toss your trash from the balcony straight into the bin outside. Our reservation was canceled by the accommodation provider three days before arrival, supposedly because of overbooking. Trying to sort it out with them was very unprofessional. They said they had tried calling a few days earlier, but there were no missed calls on his phone, so I doubt that happened. People on the island say Sea Pearl Apartments cancels at short notice, for instance when someone on another booking platform offers more. The locals are very dirty and like to blast loud music. For decent service and quality, my tip is to book on Bastimentos only with accommodation owned or managed by people from North America or Europe.
