Hotel Montreal

My three-day stay in room 102 was uncomfortable enough that I checked out and found a hotel better suited to me for less than $10 more. I’d booked this place for the cheap price, and it’s safe and close to the metro. Cleanliness depends on your standards. The staff I dealt with were friendly, including two of the three receptionists, the wait staff, maintenance, and housekeeping. But I’d read about free breakfast and a pool, and nobody mentioned those at check-in. The Wi-Fi was hit or miss, though better in the lobby. The room was stripped-down basic, really just a bed for a couple nights if you don’t plan to spend time there. The furniture, including the headboard, nightstand, table, and closet shelf, was plywood painted grey. Construction noise gave me a headache each day while I was trying to work remotely. The shower never had hot water, and there were no hand towels or anywhere to put the bath soap. My towel had a red ink mark in the corner that looked like blood, and the bathroom was so tight that if you’re tall your knees hit the wall. The toilet handle broke but was fixed in under 10 minutes. The AC worked great. There was a roof window facing a cement wall, so I kept the blinds down, and the ground view was kind of dirty and unappealing. The shower window was also at ground level, with cement walls blocking the view, so I kept it closed. I won’t return.

At $33 a night, everything in the room was good, but there was no window, so I couldn’t tell whether it was day or night. I don’t understand why a room with a window costs the same. Room service came every day, and there’s a pool on the top floor.

The rooftop view was pretty nice, and the staff were very nice. The place was clean too. I stayed November 1-7, during the holidays, and music blasted all night. I was lucky those were national holidays, otherwise I would’ve asked for a refund and everything. Do NOT accept a room on the 7th floor, or even the 6th or 5th, during the holidays.

The staff were nice and accommodating, the AC was good, and I slept well. The water gets hot and there’s enough pressure for a shower. Hotel Montreal is basic but very clean, and while the linens are old, they’re clean, like mine at home 😁. I was leaning toward a 4-star rating, but the lounge was nicer than I expected, so the closed roof bar wasn’t a big deal. It beat my expectations and earned 5 stars. You can’t go wrong for the price.
