Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo, Panama City

I loved having coffee on the patio overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The room was spacious and inviting, with a sofa and wet bar, and the rain shower was the best I’ve ever used. Breakfast at the restaurant is a must, and the rooftop bar has wonderful views and unusual cocktails. Everything feels luxurious, and the hotel is within easy walking distance of everything. If I could give it six stars, I would.

After friends strongly recommended it, we booked a Superior King Room with partial ocean view for a New Year’s stay, December 29 to January 3. Our first room, 109, was below street level and had a strong damp, musty smell in both the room and hall. We reported it several times to the front desk and concierge, but the first efforts didn’t help much, and management said no other rooms were available. I was so disappointed that I initially left a one-star review. On the third day, after seeing the review, the hotel operations manager contacted us, apologized sincerely, and acknowledged the room fell short of their standards. They moved us to an upgraded room on the fourth floor for our final two nights, and it was a significant improvement. After the move, we could enjoy the vacation and the beautiful property, including its grounds, lobby, and outdoor spaces. The hotel has several excellent dining and bar options, and staff throughout were friendly and welcoming. The apology, thoughtful accommodation, and upgraded room made a real difference, and showed a commitment to guest satisfaction. We’ve revised our review to reflect a much more positive impression.

The staff made everything easy. Concierge Miriel Jaén arranged our dinners and excursions, and every suggestion was spot-on. Our butler, Carlos, was also wonderful, professional and kind. We travel often, and staying at the Sofitel Legend in Casco Viejo was one of our finest hotel experiences anywhere. The location is perfect, the design is breathtaking, and it manages to feel both elegant and welcoming. It’s a destination in itself, and luxury at its best. We can’t wait to return.

The cocktails at El Arcano, the hidden speakeasy, were good, though a little sweet. The vibe was relaxed, service was great, and the seats were comfortable. Reservations are highly recommended. After coming off the elevators, turn toward the restrooms and look for the hidden door in the mirrored bookshelf. Enjoy!
