We took a chance on this restaurant after a cute schnauzer welcomed us, and ended up having one of our best meals in Aguas Calientes. The setting beside the train tracks is scenic. The trout ceviche and baked trout were delicious, as were the pisco cocktails.

The stuffed peppers were okay, but my wife’s lamb was so tough it was inedible. We also weren’t given the advertised 2 for 1 drinks price. When we went to pay, they said the drinks were only slightly cheaper, not half price. I wish I’d checked earlier reviews. I wouldn’t recommend this place or come back.

We’d seen the bad reviews but stopped in for a few beers anyway, ready to argue about a service charge. The man at the door agreed to a 2x1 happy hour deal. Beers were listed at 15 soles each, and we ordered four separately, expecting to pay for two at the deal price. Instead, they tried to charge us 60 soles, the full price for four beers, and put a 4x1 deal on the bill. I speak fluent Spanish, and their explanations made no sense. They claimed the deal we’d agreed to was 2 for 35, which would cost more than two regular beers, then came up with other excuses too. It felt like they were counting on us being confused tourists. When we refused to pay 60, they threatened to call the police and said 50 was the best they could do. We left 40 on the table and walked away. The police evidently aren’t looking for us. Please don’t give them your business. They’re full-on scammers.

I was nervous after reading the reviews, but we really liked this place. We skipped the burgers and pizza and ordered Peruvian food instead: papa rellenas, lomo saltado, and an empanada. It was fresh and much better than some places we’ve tried so far. We came in late, at 10:15 pm, and they stayed open until we’d finished. Service was relatively quick, and none of the prices surprised us.

The 5% card fee was fine, but the server added 8 soles to my bill when charging my card. It was 182 soles, and she charged 190. I pointed it out and she gave the 8 soles back. Still, I’m not sure how someone gets two digits wrong like that. It didn’t seem accidental.
