We were sorry we didn’t have longer to explore the area around Nuevo Tingo. Roberto welcomed us after our late bus and made us feel at home. It’s a great base for visiting Kuelap, and our stay was very comfortable. Roberto also cooked us a great breakfast and a delicious lunch.

Nuevo Tingo was a wonderful place to stay. Silic hostel is simple but has what a traveler needs: a large room, a clean bed, and a clean bathroom. The bathroom is outside, but there’s only one room, so you won’t share it. As others have said, Roberto is the real highlight. He knows a lot about the area and other parts of Peru, and it was great chatting with him and getting tips for the rest of our trip. Highly recommended.

Roberto is warm and outgoing, and a superb host. He made me fine breakfasts and lunches for a small fee, and my bed was comfortable and clean. The hostal is small, with two bedrooms and an outside bathroom. There’s a little store a couple of blocks from the van station, just up the street. I walked down from Kuelap and took a taxi back up to Nuevo Tingo. Roberto asked me how much the driver charged. I’m sorry I didn’t have time to see the Silic ruins, only Kuelap.

Nuevo Tingo is a friendly town, with hardly any vehicles and plenty of helpful people. We felt comfortable letting our children explore, which is unusual for us. There are great walks and views, and Roberto was happy to show us around. Kuelap is worth visiting, though it isn’t cheap. Roberto is a lovely, attentive host. We booked one night and stayed three. The hostel is basic but relaxed, clean, comfortable, and well maintained, and we enjoyed seeing the local hummingbirds. Thanks for taking care of us, Roberto. We hope to see you again, and would be glad to host you or meet up in the UK. Bring cash before you arrive, since there’s nowhere in town to withdraw it. You may end up staying longer than planned, and not because of floods or landslides.

Tingo is a gorgeous little village, and this is the best place I’ve stayed in Peru so far. Roberto is interesting, helpful, and keen to chat. He speaks English well and helped me with my Spanish.
