I judge a hotel by what you get for the price in that area and country. For less than $20 a night I had my own room and bathroom, and it was dam near quiet, which is hard to find in Europe or South America with all the fiestas, traffic and barking dogs. It’s a little dated, of course. If you’re cold, ask for another blanket. A nice older lady and a younger staff member were very kind and helpful.

The breakfast terrace has a beautiful view over Cusco, and breakfast itself is plentiful and delicious. I stayed for four weeks; the rates are affordable, the staff are attentive, and they let you cook. You can leave your luggage there while you’re out on an excursion, too. They also take volunteers. The Wi-Fi isn’t good.
