Sol Ollantay Exclusive Hotel

The rooms are okay if you get one with a nice view. Some people we talked to said their walk-in shower had no door. For the price, I’d avoid this place. The service was terrible. They didn’t clean our room after the first night because they said they needed our permission. We gave permission, but after the second night they still didn’t clean it. Breakfast started off great, then got worse each day. At 7:45 on the last morning, just 45 minutes after it began, there were no eggs, avocado, cucumbers, tomatoes, or potatoes, though those had been available on earlier days.

The location is good and the staff are friendly, but that’s about it. The hotel felt like it was closing or was a scam: it’s overpriced, the amenities are poor, and the rooms don’t match the photos. There was no buffet breakfast on two of the three nights we paid for, hot water was limited, and construction all around made it impossible to relax or acclimatize. They didn’t answer messages before arrival. The payment showed as a Marios Market Vendor Id, there were no dates online for next year, and their website was down. It all seemed very suspicious. They didn’t even offer basic coffee or tea.

It’s a beautiful area, with a safe village to walk around at night. The center is about a 1-2 minute walk away, and IncaRail/PeruRail is around 10 minutes on foot. It takes about two hours to get to machu pichu from this town. Our Expedia reservation wasn’t showing in their system, but they honored our receipt, which I was very thankful for. Breakfast was great, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The shower was cold on the first day, but changing rooms fixed it.

The creek beside the hotel made for lovely nature sounds while sleeping. Our room was clean, the shower was strong and hot, and it was the best one we’ve had so far in Peru. Staff responded quickly to requests, and even brought complimentary tea to our room in the afternoon. Heating came on automatically at 8pm, though it wasn’t very strong. We’d been a little concerned by recent negative reviews about bait and switch, but our check-in went smoothly. No complaints!
