Avoid Amazon Brest. We lost more than $200 worth of audio equipment during our stay, along with other personal belongings. The staff deliberately left our room door and window open while we were out, in our view, and management has taken no responsibility. They have ignored our texts and mocked us after we gave them several chances to sort it out. We still haven't received a sincere apology or compensation, and now we're involving the police. We were also left feeling that guests who are "gringos" are treated differently, which we believe is discrimination. They blame guests for what happens under their watch. We don't trust the housekeeping staff and suspect they may have been involved in the theft, but that's our belief, not something we can prove. The housekeeping staff can be moody and rude, and get angry if you don't follow their cleaning schedule, which changes from day to day, sometimes 11 am, sometimes 1 pm or 3 pm. You're expected to arrange your day around them. Reception staff mostly play video games and don't pay attention to guests. More than once they watched us struggle with our bags without helping, despite there being four floors and no elevator. There are no security cameras on the floors where the rooms are, only cameras to protect the hotel, so anyone could get into the rooms. The property is dirty and run-down, with wall stains, paint marks, dirt on the floor, poor bathrooms, used furniture, and rusty refrigerators. Even after cleaning, wiping the floor with another towel left it just as dirty. Construction began after we'd paid for a week, with jackhammers and an unreasonable amount of noise every day, 7 hours a day, 7 days a week, without any warning. There was mud, concrete, and sand everywhere at all hours, and it was impossible to rest. We stayed almost a month and weren't offered a discount for the disruption. At first the place may seem promising, but we found the management indifferent and unhelpful. They don't seem to care about guests. Avoid this place.

We only spent one night, but the service made us happy. The staff were nice, and there was a lovely rooftop terrace. We could leave our bags there for a few days. Our room was clean and had air conditioning.

We booked a rate that included airfare, so the price worked out reasonably. Brest Amazon is a proper hotel: all rooms have air conditioning and cable TV, there's cooked breakfast on the rooftop, and the shower has a small water heater. They also gave us free rides to and from the airport and provided clean linens each day while we were out on day tours. We arrived without tours booked, and they connected us with a tour operator that collected people from other hotels. The location is the main drawback, about six blocks from the town square, where a couple of other hotels are situated. Still, it's a solid choice if you'd like to feel a little more local. You should know Spanish.

Stay away. It was filthy and noisy, and they claimed there was air conditioning, but there wasn't. The pool was empty and the breakfast was disgusting. Worst hotel in Peru.

I won't stay here again, though I'd return to the area. Some of the tours they offered were only in Spanish, despite our being told they spoke both languages, so if you're not fluent, you'll just be looking at the scenery. I suggest doing some research and renting a car or bike instead, but be careful because the traffic rules aren't like the ones we're used to. The room came with airport pickup and drop-off, which seemed promising at first. We paid for a "matrimonial" room, one of the more expensive options, expecting at least a queen bed, especially since Google rated it well. Instead, we got a double bed, one lamp, and no swan-shaped towels like the photo showed. There was air conditioning, but only a thin sheet to sleep under. With it over 32 degrees outside and no windows for airflow, we couldn't find a comfortable setting: we woke up freezing with the AC on, then boiling after turning it off. We even had to ask for the sheets to be changed. The shower worked very badly and looked poorly installed, as in the picture I posted. The bathroom sink was mouldy and there was no hot water. They told us there was a safe, but there wasn't one. We later learned our cash and passports had been left in an unlocked room drawer with no lock. Given the stories about corrupt police taking advantage of travelers, that felt unacceptable. Luckily nothing happened to us, but we heard of cases where police forced people to withdraw all their money, leaving them with only their plane tickets and passports.
