Hotel Mabey Urubamba

The front desk staff were really helpful, and a tuk tuk ride gets you to the main square and its nice shops quickly. Breakfast was disappointing when we arrived near closing on both mornings, with the hot food dried out, so we ate elsewhere. Also, if you sleep lightly, the barking dogs and a rooster starting up around 4:30 a.m. may be a problem. The dogs barked for long stretches in the middle of the night both nights we stayed.

Breakfast was the biggest letdown: the coffee was instant, the juice tasted artificial, and most of the food didn't seem fresh or healthy. The watermelon and pineapple were good, though. I also had to go to reception whenever I wanted a hot drink. The bathroom and hairdryer were in good shape, but hot water was unreliable, working fine the first day and turning cold the next. I was there in mid-October in room 206, one of several buildings, and heard quite a bit from the neighbors. Stray dogs around the area bark a lot in the evenings too. The room wasn't as cold as I'd expected from other reviews. Exotica, my tour operator, arranged this cozy hotel for my Machu Picchu visit. It has a beautiful garden and plenty of charm, and some of the other services were quite good, but comfort and food could use improvement.

The gardens and grounds were gorgeous, and we had time to wander around and take pictures after packing. The bus to the train station stops right at the door, which was so convenient. My daughter and I arrived a little after 20:00 after a nightmare flight from Lima with LATAM. Check-in was quick, though we were tired and hungry, and paid a lot for a bag of chips since there was no dinner. Our room was large, with two comfortable beds and a nice, spacious bathroom. It was a bit chilly, and I couldn't get the heater to work, probably my fault, but there were plenty of blankets and I slept great. The shower had lots of hot water in the morning. The breakfast buffet was excellent, and we enjoyed a couple of cups of Coco Tea and some great coffee. Best hotel stay of the trip!

We barely slept because local dogs barked all night, though that wasn't the hotel's fault. It's about a 20-minute walk from Urubamba, and the rooms are basic but have WiFi. The place is set among beautiful gardens. During our two-night stay, hot water was rarely available, and breakfast was very basic with few choices.
