Sunset Hill Lodge

The staff were consistently warm, kind, and smiling, and the location is handy, very close to the port of Vaitape. Those were the good parts of my stay. The room itself had too many problems. It’s right beside a forest, but the doors have large gaps underneath, so insects and animals can get in. I found mice, worms, insects, and lizards inside. I don’t think doors fitted like that are acceptable for a hotel here. They need proper seals to stop this happening. The bathroom was poor as well. Water pressure was weak, hot water was scarce, and the shower drain was badly rusted, something I haven’t seen at another accommodation. If you’re still thinking of staying, I’d ask for an upstairs room. It may offer a little more protection from wildlife and fewer unwelcome visitors. I’ve included photos of what I experienced. This place has potential because of its location and lovely staff, but it needs serious improvements before I could recommend it. I don’t enjoy leaving a negative review, but I felt this one was necessary.

A peaceful, very pleasant place to stay near a church. My room had good equipment and a balcony with an amazing ocean view. I also really appreciated how helpful and kind the owner was. Thanks again 🙏✨

Gerard made me feel at home as soon as I arrived. He’s a caring, helpful, and very friendly host. I stayed in the upper apartment by the water, with a sunset view I won’t forget. There’s plenty of room, it was spotless and comfortable, and the kitchen had everything I needed. The terrace was incredible, and you can swim in the lagoon right outside. There is some boat traffic since the gas station is next door, but it didn’t bother me. Friends of the owner rent bikes for a small fee. The supermarket and Vaitape center are about 15 minutes away on foot or five minutes by bike. Matira beach is quite a ride in the sun, but doable early in the morning. Otherwise, a car or taxi gets you there in about 15 minutes. I absolutely recommend staying here and enjoying Bora Bora.

Our final night was in the beachside room, which was bigger and more comfortable than the one we had on the hillside for our first night. Both rooms, though, were very poorly insulated. The first was small and we ran out of hot water. At check-out, the cleaning lady arrived at 10 a.m. We were packed and politely asked if we could wait a little longer while she finished cleaning next door, because my six-year-old son had a fever and I’d just given him medicine. About half an hour later, Gérard came in without greeting us and started arguing. It was only 10:30, the cleaner was still next door, and our bags were already by the door. He wouldn’t listen when we tried to explain. He was extremely rude and unpleasant. When we checked in and out, we saw the owner, Mr. Gérald, but couldn’t get even a “bonjour” or “hello.” We felt invisible to him. It’s a shame to leave this beautiful island with such a negative impression because of one person. Please don’t spend your money here. Avoid it absolutely! P.S. The rooms were clean.
