We loved our extra day at Hakamanu Lodge so much that we gave up our planned night on mainland Tikehau. Even when Air Tahiti was on strike and flights weren't running, the hosts helped us find a way to reach the lodge. It's quiet, clean, and very well kept, with reef sharks and other marine life easy to spot nearby. We also enjoyed taking the kayaks out to the nearby sand banks. The chef prepares very good, fresh meals, and the hosts are welcoming. We'd happily recommend staying here 💖

The simple, clean accommodations suited this family-run business, which felt nothing like a resort. Meals are available, mostly seafood, and it's worth bringing cash; there were no hidden fees and nothing was wildly expensive. We bought lunch in town. We took out the kayaks, walked around the uninhabited island behind the hotel, and relaxed on the pink shell beach. Other guests were scarce except at mealtimes. The tour they arranged, mainly for French speakers, included a nesting island for migrating birds, a snorkelling spot with large rays, and a quiet beach where local food was cooked in a drum. Getting there means a van pickup followed by a 20-minute boat ride to this remote, quiet, stunning part of the atoll. I debated booking, but it became the highlight of our French Polynesia trip. If you want to feel on the edge of the world, this is the place.

The natural setting is beautiful, but it's very far from the island's other spots. Our rooms smelled bad and were dirty, and the food was scarce and not good. They offered us a drink on arrival, then charged us for it. Staff were inconsistent: some ignored us, some were rude, though one was nice to talk with. I'd avoid it at all costs ^^

The island was heavenly despite three rainy days during our five-night stay, and our bungalow was clean, functional, and in a great spot. The pickup was rough, though: we were the last people left at the airport, with little apology when the driver eventually arrived. It seemed his boat had broken down, and Rose apologized when we reached the resort. Food was the main problem. Breakfast never varied: pancakes, a small piece of baguette, some fruit, and juice, tea, or coffee. There was no lunch, and nowhere to buy food, so our afternoons often revolved around being hungry. Dinner had three courses, but one starter was just a small serving of lettuce, and the portions were small. Some food preparation practices also seemed questionable. It's a shame, especially given the price. Adding lunch would be a start, and wine should cost less than 4750 xpf.
