People we met locally were kind and helpful, but the stay itself was a no-go for us. I came with my child for a competition, and the constant Wi-Fi dropouts meant I had to use phone data so I wouldn’t miss important messages. We don’t know anyone in the area. Cable TV was also out from Friday until checkout on Sunday. Each time I asked, I was told it was just that day’s problem and would be fixed, but nothing changed. The diner could improve its menu and food. On the first morning, the beef tapa was so heavy with synthetic vinegar that we barely ate it and worried we might get sick. The next day, reception hadn’t mentioned that breakfast was included, though we were eventually allowed to order separately from the group we’d arrived with. Tricycle drivers near the market repeatedly tried to double our fare when we went out, even though the TODAs clearly say members aren’t allowed to do that. We arrived in the middle of the afternoon and were welcomed warmly by the attentive reception staff. Still, my kid was very disappointed: with his phone lost and his Game Boy battery dead, there was nothing to do in the room. One local even wondered why I’d chosen to stay at Anchor. Now I know. I can’t really pretend to be unbiased about it.

The room was clean, and everyone was friendly. I got there early, and the woman at the front desk let me check in without any fuss or pesos under the table, lol. The Wi-Fi was fast when it was working, though, well, that’s the Philippines.

At Anchor Hotel in General Santos City, South Mindanao, I ended up changing rooms four times. The first had termites on the bed. They sprayed the second, but the smell was so harsh I couldn’t stay there, and my nose was still burning ten minutes after I’d left the building. The third had ants marching across the tables. In the suite they moved me to, there was a huge dead cockroach on its back and another one in the shower. I didn’t grow up around pests and don’t plan to start now. The pleasant reviews make me wonder if those people are used to living with bugs out in the mountains or bushes. Reception also said there’d be no refund. 🤣 👍🏾

The staff were incredibly accommodating, so this isn’t aimed at them. The owners really need to improve the hotel, though. The location feels shady at night and the parking didn’t feel safe. Wi-Fi was painfully slow and unusable. There wasn’t even a free toothbrush or toothpaste, and no foot mat inside the room.

The rooftop and telescope were the highlight, with a breathtaking view. The restaurant was nice too, though sometimes they shut it earlier than expected. The room smelled, and roaches can get in, so keep the AC running.
