It’s a simple, clean hostel with comfortable beds, handy for an overnight stay before seeing the whale sharks the next morning. The eight-person dorm has only one bathroom. Be prepared for lots of people arriving and parking nearby from 4:00, so you’ll hear them. The area gets busy in the mornings anyway with visitors going snorkeling with the whale sharks. There’s no social space, kitchen, or anything like that.

Staying at Way Shack Hostel made the whole trip for us. Ken runs Way Shack and was great. We contacted him on WhatsApp and he arranged everything. We took the AC bus from Cebu South Station to Oslob, and the hostel was just what we expected for a quick night before the tour. In the morning, Ken met us and took us across the street to check in for the whale shark tour. That was much better than getting up at 2 AM for a tour van from Cebu. After we checked in, we got a number and Ken told us to rest until he called. He waited for our turn and let us know when it was time. The swim was majestic. Afterward, he took us to the waterfall, which was gorgeous and a must-do, though expect to get wet. Then we came back and checked out. Next time, we plan to stay longer.

The location is impeccable, and everything was clean and well maintained. The shower facilities take a little getting used to, but the value was perfect. Kent understood what guests need and made the stay excellent. We arrived late because of road conditions, but he said it was no problem and kept in touch through WhatsApp. Basic English is enough to communicate and everything works out fine. Kent made whale shark watching easy and relaxing, apart from the early start. A family came from Taiwan.

Whale watching was just a two-minute walk away, and we managed to get an early slot to see the whales. We hadn’t booked ahead, but sorting a room with the hostel when we arrived was easy and straightforward. We stayed one night in a shared room and slept right through. A great hostel for the area and the experience.
