We only spent one night here, but we'd definitely stay again next time we're in town. The room overlooked the river and an old port crane, which gave it a feel of days gone by. It was clean, with a comfortable bed, and the newly renovated bathroom added to a great stay. The hotel is centrally located, with the Old City and lots of restaurants within walking distance.

This boutique hotel is a luxurious villa, beautifully placed on the quayside in the heart of the city. The bright, comfortable rooms are lavishly decorated, perhaps a bit too much, and have superb views of the canals and quays. But is it really five-star? No. The price isn't at a five-star level, and there are none of the usual extras: no spa, pool, luxury services, outdoor spaces, or shared areas beyond a small entrance lounge that doubles as reception. You're mostly expected to enjoy your room and the view. The hotel may have earned its fifth star because it's unique and draws VIPs seeking privacy, with the aim of putting off more basic guests.

Magda gave me a warm welcome and was helpful throughout my four-night stay, answering questions and suggesting things to do in Gdansk. My room had a great view of the harbor and the Zuraw. Hotel Podewils is just a few minutes' walk from the busy Old Town, but it's very quiet, which I liked. I hope I can come back someday.

The best thing about the place was the manager, who was absolutely lovely and very helpful. The location worked well for us, close enough to walk to Old Town but in a quiet area, and our room had a really good view. We stayed in the best room, which was spacious, but the bed was very uncomfortable. The upholstery on all the furniture was old and stained, which was rather gross. There was no bathroom or toilet fan, and only a bath, no shower. The ceiling was too low to stand in the tub to shower, and the bathroom window had no blind, so half of Gdansk could see you naked. Since it's a heritage building, there's no lift, so we had to carry our bags to the second floor. That wasn't a major issue for us, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who needs an accessible place. This is not a five-star hotel, and I'm not sure it's even four-star.
