Hostel Przy Targu Rybnym

The staff were fairly nice, though they didn’t speak English, and they let us leave our bags for free after checkout. Beyond that, this was a really rough stay. Our 12-bed dorm was in the basement with almost no heating, and it smelled so bad I threw up. The mattress was worn down and sagged under me, and there were no privacy curtains or lockers for our things. The hostel is close to the city center, but it seems to mainly house people staying long term. Nothing against them, but that’s a very different setup from a place for travelers passing through. I’d avoid it at any cost.

The location is great, and the staff were helpful. The facilities were clean, and when something was wrong they tried to fix it right away. My bad experience was mostly because of the woman sharing my room. It was always very warm, and I wasn’t allowed to open a window. The hostel itself also smelled bad.

The location is the only thing I liked. In the 9-bed female dorm, there weren’t enough outlets, and the ones available looked poorly attached to the wall, like they could be dangerous. The room had no window curtains, so it got very bright in the morning, and there were no lockers. Guests used the same codes at both the building entrance and the room door, which didn’t feel secure. Staff came into the room repeatedly, including before checkout, talking loudly on the phone and moving through people’s belongings. I understand the room needs cleaning, but they woke everyone up around 8am. The bathrooms were cramped and dirty, with nowhere to put things and water pooling on the floor. Wifi only worked in the lobby. The mattress was extremely uncomfortable, the facilities were dirty, and staff were rude. They also came in without warning early in the morning to chat with friends and antagonize guests. There’s more I could say, but I’ll spare you. The photos on Booking.com were false, it felt like a complete scam. Don’t stay here.

The hostel was clean and cozy, and the woman at reception was friendly and willing to help. It’s only a few meters from the old town. I spent one night in a women’s room, and it was pretty all right.
