Karczma Rzym

I went for the salad with pear, chickpeas, and beetroot, and the balance worked surprisingly well: crisp leaves, earthy beetroot, hearty chickpeas, creamy hummus, and warm caramelized pear, finished with olive oil. The place itself has a settled, old inn feel, with wood, warm light, and heavy tables that make you want to slow down. Korczma Rzym in Bydgoszcz has that literary quality, and the city's canals and brick façades suit it. Bydgoszcz feels calm and cultured, shaped by its trading and industrial past rather than noisy tourism. The pâté board was another simple Polish starter done well, with dense homemade pâté, fresh crusty bread, croutons, and sharp pickled cucumbers. Żurek was thick and aromatic, with a proper rye sourness that warmed me up without being heavy on spices. The goulash was just as hearty, tender slow-cooked meat in a rich sauce with creamy mashed potatoes and a touch of herbs. I had Żywiec Porter, dark and full-bodied with coffee, chocolate, and caramel notes, alongside cold vodka shots. It all felt in tune with the food. This is a place grounded in memory and flavor, and for authenticity, atmosphere, and regional cooking, I'd give it five stars.

I left with a very bad impression. At check-in, the staff member pushed me to pay extra even though my Booking.com reservation was confirmed. He said they only take cash and that nobody ever pays through the site, which is plainly untrue. The whole exchange felt like a scam, with shady behavior and attempts to bargain for more money. I wouldn't recommend staying here.

The setting is attractive, clean, and nicely decorated, with a pleasant atmosphere, but our food was disappointing. My fish came with a carrot that smelled unpleasant and seemed old. The Golonka had cold gray potatoes that looked like they'd been sitting around, not freshly prepared. When we told the waiter, he replied that nobody else was complaining. That didn't make our meal any better, and our experience still fell below standard.

The staff were warm and attentive, and both the food and the restaurant were lovely.
