Hotel Vela

After we asked to move from the winter garden/veranda, where smoke from the pizza oven had filled the space, we were seated in the main room. Drinks and food arrived fairly quickly, but the waiter never came back after serving us. We had to go to the bar whenever we wanted to order more, while he spent most of the time on his phone. They need to get their priorities straight. I really don't recommend this place.

The hotel restaurant was very good, and I can recommend it for dinner. All the food was delicious. The breakfast was also good and enough to start the day. My room was large, clean, and had a nice river view, though the bathroom design was a bit strange. The people were very nice and friendly.

The room was seriously hot, and the only way to cool it was a really bad floor fan. It was hotter inside than outside, and early in the morning we were woken by breakfast preparations on the floor below. There was no sound isolation. Breakfast was poor too. If you didn't speak Polish, you wouldn't get eggs, bacon, or sausages. The sausages were cheap hotdog ones, the bread was dry, and the cold cuts and dairy products were hot. Communication was a problem throughout our stay. We booked through booking.com and were promised English-speaking staff, but that was a big lie. We'd message in English and get replies in Polish. At check-in, the receptionist's English was so bad she spoke Polish to my wife, who understands a little but doesn't speak it, while we answered in English. I don't think we'd have gotten our rooms if we hadn't understood a little Polish. At breakfast, staff spoke Polish to us, and when we asked in Polish whether they spoke English, they said no. One evening, the waitress seemed completely lost, and even when we tried speaking Polish, she couldn't or wouldn't understand because our grammar was a little off. If you don't speak Polish, don't stay here.

It's a small, nicely presented hotel in Tczew with 11 rooms. The shower head didn't work completely, and there was no control of the A/C. The pizza restaurant downstairs was great, though the service was a little slow.
