The mountain views and cool, peaceful surroundings made this feel like a real retreat. Canyon Hotel Barranquitas has a warm, welcoming feel, and the staff were kind and attentive throughout our stay. Our room was clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully put together. It felt like staying with family, and we’d happily come back for an authentic Puerto Rican getaway in nature.

There are plenty of pleasant little restaurants nearby, though the hotel itself doesn’t have one. We took a short break as residents of the island and found the clean, comfortable room and convenient location just right. The building also has a security gate, which put us at ease. We’re planning to return in the summer for more local tourism.

We stayed in room #10 in October, and I wouldn’t recommend it, especially at $144 a night. The ceiling leaked onto the bed, and although they said they’d repair it, nothing was done. The TV remote had dead batteries, and the air conditioning barely cooled the room, as if it was being throttled. After our late check-in, the bottom gate was always open when we came in after dark. As a native, I found that extremely dangerous. There’s also a bar next door, so this doesn’t seem like a good spot for families. Maybe a couple looking for a quick stay or some fast action would feel differently, if you catch my drift. Management needs to make serious changes if they want this place to thrive and bring in more guests.

Changing rooms turned into a hassle, and the room we got didn’t match what the online description had led us to expect. The owner was abroad, while the manager seemed nice and wanted to help but couldn’t make decisions without approval from an owner we couldn’t reach. For the price, they need to either cut the rates in half or put serious money into the rooms. There are beautiful places to stay around here, and this one isn’t among them.

On our return with my wife, we booked a smaller room. It had no kitchen or fridge, still no hangers, a toilet that didn’t work properly, and a shower with very low flow. The owner was the best part of the hotel: accommodating, cordial, caring, understanding, and a spiritual, wonderful person. When I had a difficult situation with my mother, he helped us get a room at the last minute. Fixing the smaller issues could really help this place prosper. On the first visit, the hotel was very clean, the room was soundproof, and the workers were friendly. It was 9 minutes from my mother's house, with a nice restaurant next door. But there were no closet hangers, and the only iron was out in the hallway under the coffee maker table. The bedroom had no TV, just a 20-inch one in the kitchen/breakfast nook room, and only one nightstand. We got two towels and had to ask for more. There were no complimentary toiletries or alarm clock either. It still feels like a work in progress, but I think the hotel has potential and will keep growing. I’d go back partly because it’s close to my mother's house.
