Coqui del Mar Guest House

The location is peaceful, which was good for relaxing, but food choices nearby are limited compared with Condado. Restaurants are about a 10 minute walk away, and I found few late night options. Walking in Ocean Park wasn't as comfortable in some spots because there aren't dedicated crosswalks. I came alone and left having made new friends. The layout encourages people to spend time together, with places to sit and chat by the pool, in a garden, by the hot tub, and upstairs in a living room or on an outdoor deck. The vibe stays relaxed, without loud party music, and it’s quite 420 friendly. Rob, the owner, also sets up daytime activities. On Saturday and Sunday there was a delicious complimentary brunch from 10:30-11:30, with avocado toast, eggs made to order, waffles, overnight oats, a smoothie, Greek yogurt, and homemade bread. Saturday also brought a free BBQ with burgers and hotdogs grilled onsite, followed by a free salsa class. There's an optional WhatsApp group to arrange hangouts, and Coqui has a whiteboard listing LGBTQ+ events across San Juan. I can't wait to return and spend longer here. It was a highlight of my time in PR and one of my favorite gay travel experiences.

The Firehouse was the bigger disappointment. It has a cool concept and location, but felt neglected, with cleanliness and upkeep problems even more obvious than at Coqui Del Mar. It didn't match what its photos and reviews had led us to expect. At Coqui Del Mar, the staff and other people were genuinely kind and helpful, which made a real difference. The property itself felt worn down, though. We saw cockroaches in our room, and while nothing was completely filthy, things felt a bit dirty or tired. The WiFi was so unreliable it was practically unusable at times, a problem since we needed to stay connected. People we met at both places were friendly and accommodating. We'd consider returning to Coqui Del Mar for its people and vibe, but we wouldn't feel the same about the Firehouse.

Pedro was so friendly and helpful, going well beyond his role for the guests. He clearly cares about his work and is very good at it. I can't say the same for the other staff I dealt with. Based on the property's overall condition, I'd give the place 2 stars.

Izzy, the innkeeper, explained the space and area so well and was amazing. Our room was described as the hotel's smallest, but it felt spacious and had everything we needed for the night. Breakfast on the terrace was delicious. We made a last-minute, same-day booking at Coqui Del Mar for my best friend's birthday and, even with a short visit, got to enjoy the amenities and friendly community. We also took an incredible gay tour to a jungle and waterfall, an unforgettable experience. Highly recommend Coqui Del Mar, and we'll be back.
