The old town felt safe, with friendly locals, even though wider Almada is a bit run down. The accommodation itself was lovely, and there's a handy mini-mart about a three-minute walk away. We were there for the Lisbon Half Marathonn, and the location worked perfectly with the road closures on race day. The ferry from Cais de Sodre to Lisbon is around a 15-minute walk away. Coming back means climbing 180 steps, which could be difficult for some. Across the street, Taverna is basic but very friendly. Their one-litre takeaway carafe of white wine costs 6 Euro if they like you and you bring the carafe back that night. I'd happily recommend this to anyone visiting Lisbon on a budget.
