Joao was great about sharing directions and suggestions, and the room was comfortable, clean, and well equipped. I especially liked breakfast, with fresh fruit and plenty of tasty choices at the bakery across from the property. Covelo is just a short walk from the main sights, which made getting around easy. I'd happily come back.

Amarente has such a magical, old-world feel, romantic and a little mysterious. Joao was generous with his local knowledge, and the breakfast was the best I had during my week in Portugal. Easily my favorite place to stay there, with real care in the details. Highly recommend it.

We were worried about getting around without a car, but that turned out to be easy. The hotel is right by the bus terminal and taxi stand, and the restaurants, pastry shops, and stores in Amarante centre are practically on the doorstep. Lai lai bakery across the way was a lovely place to sit on the veranda in the mornings, with fresh food. Even when it got busy with tourists, the patient staff helped us and we always found an outdoor seat. We had a terraced room and really enjoyed the view over the rooftops. Just know there's a long staircase to reach it, so a lower room may suit you better if stairs are a problem. The owner João walked us through the house rules and local activities, and quickly brought us an iron and ironing board when we needed them. A fantastic stay, five out of five. Looking forward to coming back and telling friends and family.

We really enjoyed breakfast from the nearby patisserie, which belongs to the host's family, and our host was incredibly helpful. The place itself is lovely. The downside was noise from the street at night over the weekend, and the heating made some odd sounds.

I was mainly drawn by the architecture, and found it fascinating and beautifully made. The owner was very kind, too. At check-in he gave me an explanation and a small brochure about the town, which made the visit more interesting. Some of the place was closed during my Sunday stay.
