Pousada de Angra do Heroismo - Forte Sao Sebastiao

I liked the location and the view from my window, and despite the drawbacks, I enjoyed the hotel enough that I’d like to return in summer. It was too cold to use the pool during my two-night stay. My room had old furniture and felt humid and stuffy, so I ran the air conditioner. The bed creaked loudly and made it hard to relax or sleep. Sound carried from the hallway too, and I could hear other guests moving around. The room key was huge and awkward, too big for a small purse, so I left it with the pleasant receptionist. Breakfast was limited. The bacon was overcooked, there were only scrambled eggs each day, and very few vegetables. I didn’t get to try dinner at the restaurant, though I’d been keen to have the steaks.

Staying inside the fortress made for a really interesting, unusual setting. The room was nice, the staff were kind and accommodating, and both dinner at the restaurant and the included breakfast were very good. A few facility problems cost it a star: the elevator was out of order, the phone didn’t work, and I got stuck in a public restroom stall. None was a deal breaker, and the staff were very helpful. I’d recommend staying here.

The style is a little dated, but the place is very clean and well maintained. We spent two nights here in July and enjoyed it a lot. Breakfast was decent, while dinner at the restaurant was amazing. It’s also good value for the price. I’d stay again when we make it back to Terceira.

We liked the historic feel, the central Angra location, and our comfortable room. The breakfast buffet was outstanding. Still, for what it costs, there are better choices. We stayed four nights as a couple, in the off-season, and the small hotel had no open bar, amenities or entertainment. A sauna would be a good start. It’d also be nice if the small outdoor pool were heated for at least a few weeks in October, and if each room had a coffee maker or kettle. The evening dining options were limited, and the lack of customers suggests non-guests aren’t enjoying the restaurant either. With a few tweaks, this hotel could offer a lot more.
