Hotel Rural da Freita

The room was spacious and had an incredible view over the Mizarela valley, though the new mattress wasn't quite to our taste. That’s a very personal preference. The common areas are spacious, cosy and in excellent condition, and we liked the quality and simplicity of the decor. The place is extremely quiet and peaceful, in a perfect location. Everyone was very kind and welcoming, from the calm man who greeted us to the rest of the staff, who may be family. Breakfast is laid out at a small station and replenished from time to time, which seemed a good way to reduce waste. One downside is that scrambled eggs could end up cold. Perhaps staff could ask guests when they sit down and cook just what they need.

Set in the beautiful Auruca forest, the hotel is a real jewel, close to water falls, natural grottos and waking/hiking trails. Great authentic restaurants are 10 -15 minutes away, and the geopark is about 20-30 minutes away. The place is elegant and very comfortable, with friendly staff and a subtle, tasty breakfast.

There’s a small café next door serving sandwiches and drinks, but for shops and restaurants you’ll need to go further: the closest food shop is 5 km away and the closest restaurant is 7 km away. The hotel itself is an amazing small place in a breathtaking spot in the middle of Serra de Freita, just 100 meters from a 60m high waterfall. Our room was tastefully decorated, with a little balcony furnished with chairs and a table. The view was incredible. There’s parking both inside and outside.

The staff were helpful and knew the area well, and the morning coffee was very good. My room was clean, spacious and had a comfortable bed. A great base for exploring the region’s geological treasures.
